im not sure what it could be but maybe the carbs need to be cleaned out you can get carb cleaner for $3 and just have the car at an idle and spray it in there with your finger around the throttle cable because it will try to die. B-12 works really good you can watch the build up just melt away. i clean my carbs about once a month

 

A weird situation, never heard anything like it.

I'd say the timing might keep it from passying 4K rpms. . .it stalls out of nowhere? ANd sometimes it starts sometimes it doesn't.

I know this might sounds silly, but check the spark plug cables. Make sure theya re in all the way. Make sure the spark plugs themselves are good. I'm sure you've done this. . .but it's all i can think about right now.

 

clogged fuel filter, thats my best bet

 

if its the fuel filters there pretty easy to change out. there are two one is behind the rear driver side tire and the other is under the hood on the passanger side of the air box

 

its getting fuel fine, so i dont think its the fuel filter

im gonna switch the plug wires with some from the 5th gen i have here, and see what that does. they seemed to be on fine and all tho.

as well, im gonna change the plugs tonight

but i dont understand the rev problem, is it maybe flooding because of not enough spark and thus it wont rev any higher?

 

What happens when you try to rev over 4000? Does it want to die or will it just not do it? It does this even in neutral?
I think there could still be a fuel problem; maybe clogged filters or a weak pump. Check the timing as well just to make sure it's not totally off.

Sounds like flooding to me...
Not actually sure about honda carbs, but I know with domestic vehicles, if the choke is stuck, they will flood like a bitch and wont run.
Again, I dont actually know if honda carbs have a choke, I know older nissans dont, they have some valve that acts like a choke.

 

Yes the carbs do have a choke. When the motor is warm, take off the air box and those mesh filter things on the inlet of each carb and see if the choke is stuck closed.
If so, i would lube up all of the linkages on the sides of the carbs and work them back an fourth to get them moving again. On second thought, it is a good idea to clean up he carbs with cleaner like mentioned above and then lube everthing up.
Check the timing, and also maybe replace the distributer cap and rotor.

 

im gonna grab some carb cleaner when i get my new plugs and wires tomorrow, hopefully this will clear it up

also, the choke is located under the steering wheel, correct?

in that case, the entire cabel is not connected to the car, and is laying in the back, as far as i can tell, where it was supposed to connect everything seems fine

could it be stuck open?

 

Stuck chokes... that's a possibility. Definitely look into that. I highly doubt the choke is manually actuated, probably uses a thermovalve of some sort and hot water from the block. I forget. I have a Weber now.

bunch a black sh*t came out the tail pipe, and seems to go a little better

 

I would check the fuel pressure just to see if your enough fuel also pull the air filter and see if fuel is leaking out as the sidedrafts will fill the air filter full of fuel if a float sticks.

 

Sounds like carbon buildup. It's also possible it's majorly plugged up with carbon. A can or two of seafoam might be in order.
