Hi Everyone! This is a research project of mine. MODS DO NOT MOVE THIS!! This is 3rd gen specific! Constantly we are bombarded in the car audio forum and here of whether or not 6.5's will fit. Yes they will. But not every 6.5 speaker will fit in our doors as some are just too deep without a spacer. The door window is the limiting factor here. I will take measurements on mine as my door panel is off right now anyway but this will help substantiate my findings. Third Gens come with a white plastic bucket with a grille on the backside that the speakers sit in. Most of us has had to cut out that grille but still can use the white plastic bucket for mounting our aftermarket speakers. I've been on a roadtrip across the midwest U.S. and got the chance to listen to alot of speakers! But do to where I live and the lack of High End speakers on display to listen to, Ultimitley I will buy online like alot of us I would presume. If I buy speakers that are too deep they are not easily returned. This for me and every other 3rd genner that is looking at buying speakers for the doors now or in the future. With the miracle of my trusty Car Audio and Electronics magazine directory issues of june of each year I will take your model numbers of speakers that fit and obtain the mounting depth of each model. Ultimately coming to maximum depth allowed in 3rd gen. Giving me and anybody else in the future a definitive answer whether a speaker will fit with out making a spacer and heavy modding.

So if you if you have bought 6.5" speakers in the last couple of years and was able to mount them successfully in the doors using the stock white plastic spacer Please Post your Brand, Model Number, and year! Thanx, Cudaboy!

ok heres what i got.

kenwood excelon xr-600. they are the dual mag, really thin ones. 2in mounting depth. they fit, but you have to turn em upside down. this is to clear the speaker hookups.

also as an assurance i pulled back the cloth on the speaker grill (stock one) and toom a dremmel cutting tool and cut out all the plastic just elaving enough of a shell to re mount it and look stock. it gave me an extra 1/4 in.

good luck.

as a side note those are the only ones that ever were close to the needed mounting depth

Have the boxes right behind me:

Eclipse - SE8365
6 1/2" 3-Way Speaker
80w Peak / 40W RMS Power Handling
Hybrid Mica PP Cone Woofer
PEI Balanced Dome Tweeter
Frequency Response 90Hz-40KHZ / 90db
Butyl Rubber Edge

I have no problem with them. I have two in my doors and two in my rear deck. They were professionally installed though but no extra charges anywhere when putting them in so I assume they had zero problems.

Ok, Thanx! We have 2". I did not find this in this years line up. I will have to dig out previous year directories. I'm pretty sure the ones I'm considering are deeper than that. I'm definetly not above making spacers permitting the grill clears but rather an answer that said speaker with a x amount of mounting depth is a drop in fit with some trimming. Thanx, again!
Edit: I realize the magnet diameter will affect my findings. This why I'm doing this! If I have not posted your speaker it is because I have not confirmed your mounting depth. If I have to I will look at dealer websites. Right now I am going to go find the june issues from previous years.

1. Jackedup: 2" Kenwood Excelon xr-600
2. 2.0sidriver: 2.5" PG Xenon x6.5:Too deep! To the best of my knowledge these where released in '95: 2.5"
3. Simon: 1" 15/16 Eclipse SE8365
4. Flyboy64: 1.87" Infinity 6002si
5. Ndtinker: 2.06" Infinity 6012i front. Infinity 6002i rear. 2.06"

Why not just get a tape measurer and measure it all? With the bucket and without and all the rest? Then people would jus have to check the measurements by checking the specs.

I had infinity kappa's before but they blew.. they were 2-3/16" deep and hit the window without a spacer (which i dont know the width of).

Alex you didn't read what I said. I said I would measure it.

I have Infinity 6002si in the front as they are shallow depth and Infinity 6021 with a rotating tweater in the back. I had no problems installing the speakers myself as they were a drop in :)

Infinity 6002si
Plus One + woofer cone
Edge-Driven, textile-dome tweeter
Peak Power: 150 watts
mounting depth 1-7/8"

as a side note, the kenwoods sopund great. they are the kind with a seperate tweeter and woffer. the tweeter is mounted on a little "bridge" over the woofer, so its all 1 unit but it doenst have a post running through the middle of it or anything. and they are a really light cone so they sound good on deck power.

keep that in mind. eclipse uially need an amp to really sing

I had Infinitiy Reference series.... EXCELLENT SOUND.. All I had to do was knock out the plastic shit because they are a little deeper, but fit perfect, no extra shotty washers/spacers or anything needed, same brand used in the rear deck but I used 6x9's, just used a jigsaw to make 'em bigger, oh, Don't break your rear windshield. If you go with the Inifinities Kappa series back there, they won't fit, because they'l hit the trunk support thingies, they are really deep, and you don't want to remove those just for speakers, it's dangerous, a lot of tension on 'em

Thanx everyone for your replies! If you don't know your model number that is ok as long as you can tell me what model year(probably the year you bought them), and if they are coaxial or have a seperate tweeter?? + the series. For some of you that have posted and not on the list, if you can give me this information i will add your entry/depth to the list!

Dano I have a question for you then I will add you to the list. According to my directories the 5002 cerwin vega was a 5"1/4 and the 6002 was the 6"1/2. If your sure they are 6"1/2 I will assume they are the 6002 and add you to the list. Its possible the magazine is wrong but unlikely 3 years in a row. Thanx again, Kevin!l

Edit: Good luck with your spacers Alex(ludapower). Let us know how it turns out!

Infinity Reference 6012i up front and 6002i in the rear, both exact same depths I think and 6 1/2inch. They work perfectly in the back and did at one time in the front, but recently (maybe due to the cold weather?) they are rattling the door with the bass, well buzzing really. The black leathery part of the door seems to touch part of the speaker edge inside and makes is buzz. Its terribly annoying.

Update! I have an identical thread in car audio forum. DJ Mittens posted in there that he used 2 boards of 3/4" MDF wood for spacers on his Mbqaurts. He stated that this 1"1/2 spacer was too much and pushed the speaker grille and door panel out. So the alowable depth of spacer material will have to be less. Either 2 boards of 5/8" mdf or a cobination of 3/4" and 5/8" or even the use of some 1/8th inch hardboard or 1/4" hardboard. Also called masonite. I'm assuming that he tossed the white buckets aside when making these spacers. Maybe he will see this and post up. Time permitting I will get the depth of the plastic white bucket spacer depth and remove my speaker and get some depth measurements tomorrow. Party first ofcourse. If not tomorrow I will get it done.

To conserve space the list is on page one!

Its off to a good start lets keep it rollin
