Cylinder misfires and engine stumbling on startup... :(

I apologize if this is in the wrong section... I wasn't really sure where to put it.

My Prelude has recently had the check engine light come on twice... I've logged the codes below.

Some background on this problem. Over the past year, my Prelude (2001 SE model) has been devloping an annoying startup problem. When the car has been sitting for a while (like overnight) it is harder to start in the morning than it used to be plus it has a new annoying issue. When it does start... for about 3-7 seconds there is some detectable shaking from the engine... like it's stumbling or something. I can feel it while sitting in the driver's seat... and after a few seconds... it smoothes out and runs like a dream. This engine stumble only ever occurs at startup and only ever lasts a few seconds. The car runs great in all other aspects. At wide open throttle under maximum acceleration there are no hesitations, hiccups or stumbles... just smooth power and a responsive engine.

My car is a 2001 Prelude SE with about 101,000km on it (about 63000 miles).

The DTC's that I found logged were as follows.
P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire detected
P0302 - Cylinder 2 misfire detected
P0304 - Cylinder 4 misfire detected
P0300 - Random/Multiple cylinder misfire detected

Recent maintenance I've done to try and fix this problem is as follows:

- New spark plugs
- New distributor cap and rotor

I have to check compression and a few other things to rule them out but I'm puzzled as this problem only seems to happen at startup (that's when the light comes on anyways, along with the shaking and engine stumbling). I'm leaning towards maybe my oxygen sensor is starting to go? I don't know... I'm not very good at diagnosing engine troubles and I know there are some pretty experienced people on here. I hope maybe some of them will be able to shed some light on this problem. Thanks for reading.

exact problem i have.... mine is low compression , rings are going in cylinder #2 :wzbigcry:
def do compression/leakdown tests ...hope urs is not the same prob cause its not a cheap or quick fix....

I'm going to do a compression test to rule this out. I'm thinking that my rings are probably okay because it would be a pretty crazy coincidence to have 3 cylinders all misfire from bad rings in the same week? Not impossible... but it doesn't seem likely.

Well it seems logical for it to be a common problem between the effected cylinders, so if you fix whats wrong you might fix them all. The questions it, what is the problem. Gtg to class but I will ponder this one, hopefully someone else is familiar with that problem and will know right away.
I'm thinking (and hoping) that you may be right... and that something is affecting all the cylinders and has nothing to do with compression or leaking. I'm just not sure what the heck it could be.

I do know for a fact that the firing order is correct... I was very careful with that when I installed the new distributor cap and rotor. The spark plugs are NGK IX iridiums which I believe are pre-gapped to the OEM 0.044"? I'll be honest that I never actually measured them... maybe I'll check them with some feeler gauges just to be sure. I'll add it to the list of things to check.

I just wanted to update everyone on my repairs here (and thank everyone for their suggestions).

So after doing a ridiculous amount of testing (entire ignition and fuel system) along with a whole lot of seemingly innocuous maintenance things... the misfires have dissappeared... much to my puzzlement and joy. Please note that none of these things I fixed seemed that bad (ie. oil wasn't overly dirty, air filter was still pretty good).

Things I did:

- Oil change 5W20 Castrol Syntec
- Oil filter change
- Cleaned air filter
- Cleaned up battery terminals
- Dielectric grease on spark plugs
- Fuel Filter

Anyways... just thought I would throw that out there. I cleared the engine codes and they have not returned for a week now so I think I'm in the clear.
