i have searched the forums with no luck i have a 99 type sh and my reverse recently went out, getting on it i noticed afterwards that i lost reverse sometimes it comes back but not for a few months now, and im hoping that i would just have to adjust the linkage as it feels like there is a wall in front of reverse, and also a lil grindage in 3rd and 5th :/ maybe a little light on the situation?

iirc reverse doesn't have a synchro
id second that, doesnt the straight cut gear for reverse help some of the situation?

my syncrho is bit effed for 2nd gear too, it isnt actually a grind it just wont go in sometimes when im all in vtec for 1st to 2nd, usually gotta double clutch it

it sucks that im like 7th owner with only being at 85k, and the tranny was refreshed around 50k. God damnit!

Yeah, I didn't think there was a synchro for reverse.
BTW, The straight cut gear is what gives the car that remote control car sound when going in reverse. LOL

I was actually having This problem as well, it ended up being a snapped tranny mount kind of let everything get out of wack. Make sure your engine is centered and your mounts aren't binding...

ive heard there is an issue with the internal shift fork that 5th and reverse share. Something about it not being manufactured right...

IMHO... Much better to simply swap it out. If you've seen a diagram of a transmission (even manual) you'd probably chicken out on fixing it. (Dont worry I did too!)

yea if you have a bent shift fork or anyting wrong with it.. you'll be locked out of reverse ---the "wall" infront of reverse

You could search using the term- wont go into reverse = at least 250 hits.

You will find the info you need in my first thread on this site - http://www.preludepower.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285454&highlight=reverse

You will need to replace the 5th gear syncros and whatever else looks worn.

I will save you the digging, here are the details...Merry Christmas...

http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1421355 see post #27

Props to anomale for the links and all...

Here are the parts:

http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...6.jpg

And here's reverse:

http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...7.jpg

Here's a closeup of the 5th/reverse fork interaction (in neutral):

http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...1.jpg

Here's how it works. Note that the 5th gear shift fork moves down to go into 5th, but has to move up in order to actuate the reverse shift fork (though it doesn't do anything with 5th gear):

http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...2.jpg

Here it is in 5th:

http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...3.jpg

http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...4.jpg

And finally, in reverse:

http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...5.jpg

http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...6.jpg

Now, what does this mean? Well, as you munch 5th gear, the synchro sleeve takes a beating. As you may notice it slides over the hub to engage with the 5th gear mating teeth and lock it on the mainshaft. OK, but the sleeve doesn't mate to anything in reverse. Well, it has to move up off of the hub in reverse, though- which can't happen if the teeth have mushroomed out such that the sleeve binds on the hub:

http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...8.jpg

http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...9.jpg

This is what happens. It's all that happens. If you happen to get reverse engaged halfway and you grind, QUIT! Grinding reverse will damage the reverse gear on the countershaft and damage the mainshaft itself (reverse is machined directly into it). What happens is that the idler gear doesn't drop down all the way, and all the reverse gears just grind. You can also widen the "pinch" of the reverse shift fork on the idler gear, which will mandate replacement of the shift fork.

What's the fix? If reverse quits and everything else is OK but grinding in 5th (or you *just* have grinding in 5th), you can just replace the reverse synchro pack. This is pretty easy as it doesn't require mainshaft/countershaft removal, just removal of the reverse fork and you can "work" it off (moving the 5th gear shift fork out of the way).

I thought this would be handy for some of you, if not for repair, then for peace of mind. I know I'm glad to finally know WTF was going on inside of the gearbox. @#$%! Honda and their brittle transmissions.

Actually... If you look closely...

5th Gen:

4th Gen:
http://www.members.shaw.ca/FifthGenTSB1/95-057.5th Gear Grind.pdf

Doesnt seem tooo hard...

Now, simply replacing what the TSB says to replace...
from: http://www.bkhondaparts.com/billkay...=&quantity=0&act=&count=0&hidSwitch=&hidIrno=

For a 92-96 Prelude Si tranny:
-Mainshaft 5th gear: $82.00
-Shift fork: $35.00
-Sleeve set: $105.00

Total: ~$222
+ Labor
I supppoooseee once prelude tranny's are so rare you'd be better off fixing it... But for now it seems that buying a used tranny would be the most economical solution.

I would not spend any money on a used trans. If you did, you would have to open it up to see if it is healthy before you install it. Or you could just cross your fingers, or pray, or sacrifice something.

As you may know, these trannys are not robust. Losing reverse and 5th gear grind are both common problems, so you may be buying a trans that is not well and looking at repairing it soon after installing it.

Or you may get lucky and find one from Grandma who never went over 3k rpm.

My advice to the OP is to buy the parts for around $300, pull the broken trans and rebuild it. That would be the most economical solution.

Looks like the TSB link is working now, actually...after I looked closely...

Merry Christmas
