So i'm thinking of doing a H22 swap on my 89 prelude. Or possibly ill just be replacing my original motor thats in the car (B20A5). The only other B20A engine i can find is the original B20A other than on jdmracingmotors.com. Would i be able to use the B20A and just use my head on it to make it a B20A5? And is there any other transmissions i can use to fit the B20A5 to get better gas mileage?
If it wasn't for the money I'd be all for doing a H22 swap, but unfortunately i don't have the money at this time. I've found a H22 for 690 dollars. And if i can use the B20A engine ive priced that at 795 dollars and i wouldn't have to buy anything other than the engine and possibly tranny. which will be much cheaper than buy everything to do a full H22 swap. Ideas?

Search... this topic has been covered alot. Personally Id go H22, but thats if you have time and money if not just replace it with your original which would be easiest IMO

Searching this topic wouldn't really answer what i asked.
Really the only thing i need to know is if i can use the head off my B20A5 and put on a B20A, and if there are any other transmissions i can use on my B20A5 to get better gas mileage.

Yes, the b20a head will bolt onto the b20a5 perfectly.

The only transmissions you can use are from 3rd gen Preludes. I'm assuming you have a d2j3 transmission in your 89. I've read that the d2j5 has the tallest gearing, but it's not gonna be a huge difference.

Well, on a dyno you may be able to tell, although I doubt it. It's virtually the same engine. The b20a compression ratio is slightly higher than the b20a5, but not enough to make much of a difference. You can search on the differences between the b20a and b20a5. It's really not a performance increase.

The reason I went with this combination is the b20a5 head had just been rebuilt when the #4 piston rod decided to give out. So I bought a b20a short block and used my b20a5 head.

Sounds great, thanks for the info. It will be much cheaper for me to just buy a B20A engine and swap them out. Although id like to have a H22A engine.

One of the members on here swapped the internals (3rd, 4th & 5th gears iirc) from an F22 tranny into the B20a# tranny. Seem to remember he was an Austrailian guy but his username escapes me right now.

I believe the swap was straight forward with no machining necessary, just slide the B20 cogs off and slide the F22 cogs on. Gave longer ratios so would probably help the gas milage
