So yeah, as the title states, lastnight while I was driving the car backfired ridiculously loud (scared a pedestrian on the sidewalk :)), engine light came on immediately following the sonic boom and the car shut off... Pulled over, and after several attempts the car started. No engine light, everything seemed fine. The car did this twice more on the way home.

At this point I'm thinking it's the distributor, or parts associated with it.
I replaced the distributor cap because there was corrosion around the connections (I had an extra one). Put that on, started the car with only one problem... the 'pop' and smoke that came from around the cap. -the smoke was only for a split second and it did not happen again. I shut the car off regardless though... haven't touched it since.

Anyone experienced something like this before?

Make sure the distributer rotor screw hasn't come out, if it does the spark doesn't end up on the correct cylinder, and it can cause all sorts of fun issues.

Check the codes, could show up the part at fault, or the sensor that had a funky reading due to the backfire.
It certainly can't hurt and it only takes a second.
