... engine melted in late 2016, Honda shop dropped in a blacktop(?).
The 5-sp tranny isn't esp. mated well - 1st could stand to be a bit more long-legged ...
Anyway ...

An oil consumption issue was diagnosed as a distributor problem ...
My long-term guys fixed it, was OK (not totally oil secure, but) ...
Moved to Florida in Feb (trailered the car), the oil leak got worse (quart every 350-500 mi.); new mechanic/garage said the same thing "opened the distributor & oil gushed out" ...
$650 later am sensing that the last 2 weeks may be leading to a claim on the 12 mo. warranty ...
Any "things to avoid", "maintenance do's/dont's", "you'll be fine, just keep a quart in the trunk" tips?
Not a downshifting maniac, local driving only, no acceleration/shifting tests ...

First off, what have the shops you've taken it to done to try and remedy the problem. The O ring on the distributor is the first place to start. Number 6 on the diagram https://www.conicellihondaparts.com/v-1997-honda-prelude-coupe--typesh--5-speed-manual/engine--distributor-tec. You can grab the part number from that page and go to any dealership and pick one up. Its a 10 minute job, you can take it to any mechanic also.
Important: Make sure it is a genuine honda O ring and that exact part number, or you can not be sure it will fit correctly. But honestly I don't see how you could be losing a quart every 500 miles through the distributor. Our H22 motors are notorious for burning and leaking oil. And as they age, they burn/leak more and more. There are a few tricks that may help, but from what I've seen, unfortunately the only sure fix is generally a complete engine tear down to replace the piston rings and all the seals/gaskets.


As far as the distro goes, start with the O ring.



Have you done a compression or leak down test on the motor? That way you can determine how bad the blow by is.

Apparently, the O-ring was replaced both times ...
And yeah, I've owned an '85, an '89, and this '97, and took for granted that oil was the main consummable ...

Have not purchased any pressure/compression tests ...

The failure to buy petroleum stocks is completely on me ...

1qt every 300-500miles is still very excessive no matter how you look at it. So, if you are covered under some kind of warranty, I'd absolutely make use of every bit of that before it runs out.
