Prelude of the Month
Shifter extender feeler

Hey everyone,

I am producing some short shifters for the 4th gen currently to make up for the lack of available products and help our community out. While doing so I had several people approach me wanting a longer shifter. So, I decided to look into the option of making an extender.

Well, what is a shifter extender and why would anyone want one? Good question. A shifter extender actually increases the length of the overall shifter. Many guys drag racing, road racing, rally racing, auto crossing, or just about any type of racing want to focus on the road. A shifter extender actually will put the shift knob much higher up near the steering wheel. Thus, making it much easier to shift. Not only do you reduce the length your hand has to move from the wheel, but you also gain leverage on the shifting.

Can it be used with a stock shifter? Short shifter? Yes, it literally screws on where your shift knob normally is. Then, your shift knob is relocated to the top of the extender.

So, with a little bit of info out there about these and what they are designed to do. Is there any interest for them?

I currently have two designs that I am looking to produce. I already have them sent to my manufacturer and am waiting on production quotes for them.

1. A straight extender. It just extends the shifter straight up so its just much longer. Its fully adjustable from 3" to about 5.5" extra length over your shifter now. It can easily be removed or placed on for a weekend racer or at your convenience with just a few wrenches and 3 minutes time. Its going to be made completely out of steel designed to be practically unbreakable. It will also be powder coated black. Cost is going to be $20-30 for them.

2. A bent extender. Just as simple as the name sounds. Its going to have a straight section that attaches to the stock shifter and then will have a 25 degree bend in it. The bend will allow you to position your shift knob at a convenient place for you. It will be fully adjustable like the straight one from about 4" to 7". Because of the bend in it overall height will be very similar to the straight one. It will lock in place at any angle you choose so you can aim it where its most useful to you. It can easily be removed or placed on for a weekend racer or at your convenience with just a few wrenches and 3 minutes time. Its going to be made completely out of steel designed to be practically unbreakable. It will also be powder coated black. Cost is going to be $25-35 for them.

Is there any interest on these bad boys?

They will fit most Hondas, subarus, and any other shifter that uses a M10 x 1.5 thread on the shift knob (will not for Nissan's).

Ill post pictures of the 3d models rendered up in the next day or two if there is any interest. Im hoping these bad boys are as useful for everyone else as they will be for me. I will only produce these in bulk if there is a large enough interest. Otherwise, they will just be for me and my cars. Im trying to help the community out by offering better products for everyone instead of just making them for me.

Hah, I was actually going to PM you about making your shifters longer. I'm definitely interested, but personally I would like just a longer shifter and not an adaptor that, while i'm sure is a stout piece, is just another failure point.

I like the idea but I want to see what the designs look like cause I don't want a adapter that looks bad with the stock boot. I don't want it to be just a straight skinny piece of metal. So if it looked something like this I would be very interested.

failure point? Do you normally bend/break the shifter stalk? Cool idea though jtc. If i still had a prelude i would be interested especially since it is removable.

Any extra stuff is a failure point. The set screws could back out and the shifter pop out, the aluminum could hog out and it could wiggle and then pull out, I could beat on it too hard and yeah, break it.

Not saying any of it will happen, but its all potential issues IMO. It would be one thing for a stock shifter to throw it on there, there is plenty of play in multiple other parts of the shifter to absorb stress. Mine is 100% solid so anything I throw at the shifter it hast to take.

I'm talking like this, thats a large lever arm that alot of force can be transferred into.

But everyone please remember, these are just my personal opinions, I'm not trying to dissuade you from this idea/product, just adding my opinions in.

I would love to at least play around with one of these, but it's probably not worth going international for something so simple.

I'd look into making the shifters a bit longer if that was a majority option, but as it is the market is very small for a longer shifter. Having said that, its difficult enough to produce small quantities of anything at a reasonable cost. Much less something that involves so much milling, turning, and bending. I hate to say it, but I dont see interest being enough to be able to produce about 100 of the longer shifters to keep the price reasonable. The 4th gen shifters are not a huge profit item to me at all and Im not sure with the number of forbidden, PSPEC and JTC Customs shifters on the market I could even sell enough to make it worth my time (ie invest.. Im still about $5800 in the hole on the short shifters now) or yours with it.

I understand what your saying, you want it to be aesthetically pleasing, right? In the picture you linked all I see is a shift knob and the reverse pull lockout. Im sure it would be easy to add a piece to it if appearance is a major concern to you.

Thanks again for more opinions too. I actually like that piece with the large section to help. I'd look into making something a bit more like that if it were feasible. That adaptor is made for that specific shifter (which fits a bunch of b series vehicles). My problem is what I have now is not made for a mainstream vehicle. Im never going to sell a bunch of anything for the prelude. And, I also want to have these bad boys work for more than just my short shifter... Its a hard mix of doing correctly and making everyone happy as possible. So, the design I have is going to be universal and should work on alot of applications. Price should also be appealing considering the only two I found available are alot more $$ and are useless for products other than the ones they sell.

Next, I'd like to point out these will be produced out of a low carbon steel, not aluminum. High strength along with durability. Its a bit harder to ruin the threads on something steel. I also have them so thick the only way it could break is the actual shifter's threaded area snapping off. Im not too worried about that being an issue at the moment.

I understand. But, I think international shipping might be pretty cheap. The size of these should make them be able to be sent by padded envelope I think. I wouldnt guess more than $5 to ship to canada. In fact, I have an envelope here I got from canada that cost $2 to ship from canada to here...

You nailed it right on the head for me. I would love for my shifter to sit higher, I always wanted to just get a cylindrical shift knob that's pretty long but I could never find one that screws on to our thread pattern. Besides the mugen one cause I don't wanna spend 100 dollars plus I don't like 3 rings on it.

Good answers. I've loved that FLP shifter for as long as I can remember, but I completely understand where you're coming from. I'll keep an eye on this and I'll probably end up picking up one of your shifters eventually, even though I have the forbidden. So I'll probably pick up and extender as well, if they make it to market.

Good to know you're on the right track though.

And thank your very much for taking the constructive criticism how it was meant to be.

I never thought I would see this... I thought everyone would have a fit seeing someone want to extend their shifter. I actually like the longer throw. Its so much smoother to shift with an extender. Combined with a skunk2 knob and it'll just fall into place.

I personally could imagine paying $20-$30 for an extender... But I paid less. Much less

It's not about making a longer throw. It's about bringing the shift knob closer to the steering wheel.

I accept with information:1.
