My new prelude!

This is a little bit more of an introduction than a general topic but I also have a few questions so I posted it here. My names nick, I drive a red 92' prelude Si. This prelude has had problems with it since the first day I got it. Before it was mine it belonged to my sister, who was nice enough to give me the car after the hood flew up when she was driving on the highway. Here's a few pics of what it looked like the day I got it:

As you can see, the hood, hinges, fender, and passenger side mirror were shot. Not shown in the pictures is the windshield is also busted pretty good. To make it drivable I picked up a used hood from a local scrap yard, a mirror from the same yard, replaced the windshield, and bought some dealer hinges. I drove it like this for about 7 months, the car only deteriorating more by the minute. One day I come home and the stock muffler has rusted completely off, and the clear coat continues to peal off unevenly.

Until one day I have a little mishap in the rain and accidentally slide into a curb. The car itself didn't seem so bad, but it was a lot worse than it looked. (forgot to take pics) I managed to bend a control arm, a radius rod, and ... the frame. The damn little hook that they use to pull the car around on the assembly line caught the curb and bent the frame back a good inch or so. Pretty unlucky huh? Well I managed to replace the control arm and radius rod for about $65 dollars, installing them myself. Than an alignment cost about $80 but made the car drivable for the time being (this is before I knew the frame was bent). Around 2 weeks later, I had went to visit my dad and had him check out my car (I knew something was still wrong with the car because the wheel was only about an inch from the wheel well). He does some work with a measuring tape and figures out that the frame is bent. After a few hours spent with the hydraulic ram, the frame is nearly back to normal (BIG improvement!). If anyone is interested in how this went about, I took a few pictures, just ask.

Shortly after this I started looking for something a little higher quality. After about a month of looking on craigslist I found a beautiful 5th gen!

So today I brought home my new 98' Prelude Type SH! It will be getting inspected tomorrow and hopefully be on the road before Friday. Here's some pics:

Sorry for the horrible quality, I had to take them with my cell phone and in the dark.

As for the questions I have that I can hopefully get some help with:
1) The small lights in between the signal lights; are they oem or some aftermarket part? I'm new to 5th gens and I wasn't sure where to find the switch when I was driving it home.
2) What RPM does vtec engage in the h22a4?
3) What is a reasonable price to pay for an OEM lip kit?
4) Does k&n use a plastic(not sure exact material) for their CAIs? It has a CAI on it with a k&n filter, I'm just not sure if the tubing is k&n. I'll post a pic when I get the car back home.

I'll probably have a few more questions about 5th gens in general, thanks for any help you can give.

I'll post some more pictures when I get the car back. The interior is mint condition and the car only has 100000 miles on it!

-nick

1) Aftermarket. The fog switch is USUALLY next to Cruise/Sunroof/Dimmer controls by the Driver side door - USDM Fogs were placed below the turns, not inside the grill like that. I could be wrong though!

2) 5400 rpm I believe

welcome to the 5th gen club.

Those fogs are aftermarket

OEM Lip kit=$ or a lot of searching

Is it an actuall cia? K&N uses plastic tubing but I have never seen a cia from them for our cars. If it stops in the engine bay then it is a short ram intake and is probably your stock intake piping with a K&N filter.

Although the question was somewhat answered.....vtec engages at ~5100 rpm at full throttle....and ~5500 partial throttle I'm pretty sure.

Its not the stock piping being used, sorry my description of how it looks is kinda bad. The intake does stop in the engine bay, near where the stock airbox would be located, I'll post a picture of it when I get the car back tonight.

stock vtec is 5200 rpm, i suggest you get a timing belt kit and a new auto tensioner, just to make sure your timing belt does not snap on your new baby

The car actually has a new timing belt on it, the guy that had it before me replaced it about a month ago. Bad news though, looks like I'm getting held up on the inspection. The windsheild has an imaginary crack somewhere on it, and one of the tires doesn't have enough tread. It's gonna cost me 120$ to have them put the tires from my old lude onto the new one (almost new tires, I probabally would had done this anyway. And the windsheild will cost 200+.

Got the tires done tonight, windshield will be getting done tomorrow (it had an exactly 2in crack in it, the legal limit not to pass is 2in), and HOPEFULLY I will be driving it by tomorrow. Also, those neat looking fog lights are illegal where I live, so they have to come off for it to be inspected.

Here's that intake, should paint a better picture than my words did. Maybe someone can tell me now!

I tried to get a shot to show how good condition the interior is actually in, the camera phone doesn't do it justice.

Little bit of a better pic of the car!

This is just the first time I've actually had it home, if you can sence the excitement at all?!

To tell you the truth, I haven't had much time to tear into the paper work he gave me with the car yet. From what I've seen so far, the car has been pretty well maintained.

Sometime soon I plan to crack the valve cover off and give it some paint (its already striped<mostly>). I'm gonna go with wrinkle red, I really like the look of those jdm engines. I'll probably end up accenting more of the bay red overtime.

I do plan to do some mods to the car, but they will be done over time, considering I have to get the car paid off. I'm gonna try to get an exhaust first, maybe someone here can help me make a choice on that? I'm looking for something not too loud with a refined sound. After driving around my h23 with no muffler for a few months, I'm a little tired of the attention the loud exhaust gets. (somehow I drove around like this for 3 months without getting an inspection ticket )

I won't be able to do major mods anytime soon because of funds and that I need this car as a DD. I'm lost having to drive an automatic TDI around as a scurry to get this new lude on the road.

-Alarm is a good investment.
-Sound system worth it's salt will be WAY more than $150
-HID's... meh.
-Exhaust- STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING OBX. Get a good exhaust, or build one.
-DO NOT get a body kit.

TO THE OP:

You have a very clean, solid platform to start with, congrats on the new car! What are your goals for the car? Daily driver with some spice, autocrosser, drag racer, ???

All the best, hope to see your car continuing on the path to improvement!

-I'm not going to put rims on it, I really dig the OEM ones it came with.
-I'm not really sure about what kind of alarm to get, not really familiar with that stuff
-The car came with a fairly new sony head unit, I already have an amp to put on it(new but its been sitting in its box for about 5 years). I will just have to get some speakers for the sound system, so that shouldn't cost me too much
-HIDs would be cool, but not very high on the list for things to do with it
-I'm gonna read some reviews on exhaust, I'll check the obx out... on the same note, is it better to buy a catback, or to get the piping made? I have a friend that owns a machine shop, I can have piping bent for the cost of the piping.
-I just want the OEM lip kit, I've seen it on a few pp.com member's cars and it looks great!

I'm glad I took the fogs off too, they weren't soldered or any thing, just electrical tape. But, I like the look that it gives so I'll put 'em back on once its inspected!(the right way)
