Motorcycle crash :(

2 saturdays ago someone decided they were in enough of a hurry to cut me off on my motorcycle.
I had just come around a turn and there's a driveway entrance about 150ft down after you come around the corner. I started accelerating out of my turn, got up to ~45mph and saw a guy going the other direction change lanes into the center turn lane. I saw his signal, I saw him change lanes, I never expected him to immediately turn in front of me! I mean really, who pulls in the center turn lane and doesn't bother to stop!?

I had maybe 10 feet to try and stop so I wouldn't run into the side of the car. I tried to stop. Used both brakes and downshifted as we learned in MSF. It was a bad combination of cold road, cold tires, adrenaline and speed. I locked the front tire up and down I went.
I went down the road on my back a ways, then on my arm and something caught and I flipped feet over head and landed on the grass. The bike went another 200 feet and ended up facing back towards me.

My jacket has a hole in the sleeve, the helmet has a couple of knicks where it hit (I need to have an x-ray taken of it to make sure its still safe to wear...$400 helmet I hope its not ruined! its only 3 months old!) I'm gonna see if I can get the sleeve patched...its a $300 jacket :S

The bike is pretty beat up. The whole left side is ground up pretty good, the frame slider has seen better days, my left muffler, grab handle, mirror are all chewed up. Left inner bar weight broke, bar end weight got thrashed...broken clutch handle, shifter ground down to a stub...

lucky for me, all I picked up was a little road rash on my ankle and scraped on my wrist, and 2 of my fingers.

Pics to follow-

That's so fucked up man! Glad you are alright! Did the other party stop or do a runner? Will their insurance pay for your bike? Some people are complete fuckwits when it comes to driving, they probably didn't even look!

well important thing is that you are okay and that the bike is not totalled... That happened to me too and I have road rash on my shoulder and my knees... almost 90% of the time... its the car's fault... they always say that they did not see us... If you really think about it... car drivers that own and ride bikes pay more attention and become more courteous to riders since we already know how it is to be on both bikes and car. Keep riding and overcome that fear of crashing since that will be haunting you for quite some time... get back in there and just ride like you did before.. RIDE SAFE man!!!

People that don't ride are clueless. Everyone that has ridden for a period of time has had some dumb sh*t pull out in front of him/her. Hope you get over it and get on two wheels again. Thank god for that helmet, and jacket rite! I never ride without at least my textile jacket. Road rash sucks. Too bad about your bike too. Glad you made it through that alive, too many people die because of unaware drivers every year.

Glad to hear your okay man that $400 dollar helmet is worth every penny and so will a new one. They say once you drop it from any height it should be replaced, so you might want to look into that. sorry about the bike and hope you get back on the road soon

Glad you are not hurt! The bike can be fixed. So tell us if the car stopped? did you get a police report. The driver should be found at fault even without no vehicle on vehicle impact. A witness would have secured this though.

I have been riding for almost 4 years now.

Oncoming cars turning left across a motorcycles path account for a great number of motorcycle crashes each year. I am always wary of this situation and slow way down when an oncoming car appears to be turning left. You can stop your bike from 35mph much faster than from 50 mph.

People on the roads these days are becoming increasingly idiotic and the number of people using cell phones for texting and internet access WHILE DRIVING is astounding! I've seen it many times.

Wear your gear all the time! I don't care if it's 95 degrees. You're an idiot if you're on a motorcycle with nothing but a helmet and a T-shirt and shorts.

Glad to hear your alright. I wouldn't send the helmet in if I was you. The smallest dent in the foam, they call it unsafe, and destroy it for you. You'll just get a letter back saying it is no good and they destroyed it. I personally don't believe in that whole, one drop its dead thing. I'm sure it did loose a little absorbing ability, but I can't imagine it was enough to make it unsafe.

One thing riding has taught me is you always have to be the defensive driver, and always expect someone to do something stupid. I take it you didn't get the ABS on the Intercepter? Locking up the brakes is a reflex you have to fight. If you lock up the front wheel on a motorcycle, no matter how short a time, its almost a sure bet your going down. Hope your covered by insurance, once again, glad your alright

The driver took off, like an asshole. There were many people that stopped, one an off duty officer (he stopped after the accident...unfortunately he didn't witness it or that son of a bitch that cut me off would have been in a world of hurt!) I wish I'd been in any state of mind to jump on the bike and chase after him myself! Believe you me, I would have! ...unfortunately, even if I had, the clutch handle was broken so I wouldn't have been able to.

One witness came up to me and said "I've been riding for a lot of years and I think I saw that happening before you did. I tried to follow the guy and get his plate but he was gone"

It was just east of the intersection at 9000 south and 4000 west.

Yep...bought it back in July.
I went off the road 3 days after I bought it and had some damage on the left side...but not this much! I have a new set of plastics here (thankfully I hadn't installed them!) The insurance came out and cut me a check for new gear and to fix the bike that time...I probably could have called again but I didn't want to make another claim so close to the last one... I'll just have to suck it up and get new gear out of my own pocket.

I'm glad I had the frame sliders or there would have been WAY more damage. I'd be installing a new radiator and fan, and that whole left handle bar(instead of just the weights), new mirror...ick. That $50 nylon puck saved me a world of hurt!

People are idiots. They get behind the wheel and turn off their freakin' brain.
I hope the guy feels good about himself (my guess is he probably didn't even know what happened)

No, I didn't get the ABS model. I wish I had done a little more research before I went and bought this.

My next bike will have ABS for sure!

I wish my instinct had been to try and turn instead of brake, I might have made it around him in time...then again, I might have run into the back door of his car.

I wear my gear if its 100*+ out. I don't care how sweaty I get (not all that bad actually...mesh jacket FTW) I won't even let anyone else take my bike if they won't wear at least a helmet. That's just asking for the worst to happen.

I plan on it...new gear and being back in the saddle next spring.

Oh it wasn't cutting me off like that...he cut a left turn across my lane.
I wish I had his info and insurance to cover all these damages.
My bike is beat up and my body still hurts like hell.

closer to $400...and that was a 20% discount! I never thought riding would be so expensive!

I'm grateful for the jacket, won't ever ride without it. The little road rash I got hurts bad enough....I never want to be covered in it! I've had some friends that picked up road rash up half their body because they had shorts and a t-shirt.
