Loss of power while driving on highway...

Well i have a 99' Auto-Lude with 143k miles, recently changed the oil so im good on that with about 1/2 tank of gas. Just writing any info i know.

I was driving at about 68mph on the highway on cruise control, when all of a sudden my rpms shot up and then down, as if it had shifted on its own or something, then lost complete power. No noise just the engine reved up as if i had downshifted. I stepped on gas and nothing, my car was slowing down on its own so I just pulled over. I pulled over for about 10 minutes and decided to try and start it up and it came on but now i have a CEL. I haven't had time to go and check it out yet as I go into school at 5:30 and get out at 8:20 pm (can't miss any more days). Just want to know if any of you guys have experienced this before.

Was your foot on the gas the whole time? Like, when it started revving up? Because, if it was your transmission is goin out.

Run the code. Thers a way to do it by using only an electrical connector/paper clip/something of the sort. It literally takes two minutes to do.... its kinda fun too LOL

Your tranny just took a dump. That's the symptom of slipping clutch(possibly 4th clutch).

Well went to check my cel and got the code...unfortunately the little piece of paper flew out the window but i remember what it said.

Failure of transmission selonoid #2 or something like that and
OK to drive vehicle....that's what it said he even showed me cause i was like what?

So i guess its a warning sign that my transmission is about to take a dive, right?

Well if it's a failure of solenoid #2 then you can always replace that. Brand new from honda it's only about $36 and is held onto the outside of the transmission by two 10mm or 12mm bolts and 1 2pin connector. If I still had my auto transmission I'd sell you the part but alas, I do not.

No, i was on cruise control then my car acted like it downshifted so the rpms went up (as if i had hit the gas pedal but didn't). Once the rpms went down to 0 and mph to 0 my car still had enough momentum for me to drive it towards the right shoulder and stop. While i was still rolling i tried to push the gas but no go. Put the car on park and turned the ignition to off. I Waited 10 minutes and car started so i drove to school. Afterwards it ran fine like nothing had happened, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear were acting normal.

Yea you're right, i guess cause he pointed it out to me and it was on the outside of the transmission. He pointed at #1 which was visible with the hood open but he said #2 is on the lower part of the transmission which was harder to see. Is he correct on this?

Also what does the selonoid do? why is it necessary, Just curious?

#2 should be visible as well, you can grab a copy of the Helms 97-01 Honda Prelude Service manual and check the diagrams yourself. It is necessary to the proper function of the transmission, you've already seen what happens when it fails lol.

The solenoids are used to direct transmission fluid through channels which when pressure is applied operate or activate the clutch mechanisms in the transmission. It's a horrible system.

If it was only that easy Kronn...
It sucks to see my car go down the drain. If it was that easy to let the car go i would but i've grown to it. I have the money to go out and buy a new car but just feel connected to this one as it is my first car i bought on my own. I paid cash on the spot and never had to make a payment. Man i felt so good.
Only got the prelude as an auto because it was meant to be my daily driver.I also had a GSR i was gonna work on but ended up selling it instead cause some guy offered me good money for it. So now i only have my Lude, sadly i bought it before i knew about the auto tranny.
I've been looking towards doing the 5spd swap but i've been hearing about the troubles that happen afterwards.
