EGR CEL on for the third time. should i clean or replace?

my egr's cel has come on for the third time that i've owned this sexy ride. i cleaned it real good the first time, cleaned it slightly half-assed the second time, and now i've been driving around for 2 months with the CEL on again. my mechanic told me i might have to replace it after the first time i cleaned it. i really dont see any point in replacing it, if i can simply clean it. it's just an open/close valve, right? you guys got any opinions?

the mechanics will tell u that the problem is with the valve but its actually an issue w/ the ports near the intake mani. they get clogged w/ carbon on occasion, personally im on my 2nd CEL, plan to get started on the job today or tomorrow.

the job itself is really easy, there are several writeups on here from people who have done it before so u can follow one of those, do it yourself and save about 300 bucks.

good luck

x2. I had to clean the ports on mine for it to go away. EGR valve is still functioning properly at 171k miles

Make sure it's got weight to it. Otherwise you'll just be jerking off a threaded rod

I tried a home-made type thing....I workeed at it for 4 hours(that's right, you heard me) and got nowhere.

I then later bought the kit from harbor freight I was told to buy in the first place.............within 3 taps, the plug came out. I was beyond pissed. You don't even understand.

I wish you were close, I'd do it for ya.....I'm proud I know how to do it...hahahahaha

x2, but slide hammers really are pretty easy to make...

mine came out in like 2 easy taps, and cleaning was, well, cleaning.

it appears that all you really need is a good amount of weight on the slider, combined with a good grip on the plugs. i think i should be ok. if i really get frustrated, i may consult my drill index, and simply bore them out very carefully.

edit: i still have to spread more rep around before i can give any to xxfaIlacyxx... sorry fall-ace.
