Story bout a guy who had 17 Preludes.

Here's a story bout this guy who really freakin liked Preludes a lot:

Dude is fresh outta high school, workin at Burger King (or as I like to call them, 'Booger-Fuck') and his mom was nice enough to give him a real nice '88 Prelude 2.0Si, Pheonix red witta auto trans. Was his graduation present, sorta, and to get to and from work. Well dude saved up some loot and hooked it up with a Kenwood Mask head unit, Infinity 6.5's up front, and 6x9's in boxes out back. For bass, he went way way overkill, had two USacoustic amps, each one 750 watts into two Kicker Solo-baric S15D's (this was back in the day when the Solo-barics were round) This shit shook the ground. He also had real dark 5% tint, a leather boot around the auto shifter, chrome hubcaps (he was an 18 year old kid please forgive the chrome hubcaps) Its a shame theres no pics because this was 12 years ago when these cars were not very old yet, this one was in great shape, no rust/dents/dings/damage of any kind)

Well lo and behold, guy decides he wants a 5-speed, so he sells the red 88, but now he's gotta find a car fast to get to and from college and work, so he settles for an 88 Accord coupe with a hatchback, white, 5-speed. Stalled it out plenty of times learnin to drive a stick. Only a few weeks pass when he was weary from a hectic schedule, takes his eyes off the road for only a moment to adjust the window or something, and veers off the road and totals the car. Aw shit. Fuck. Wish that didnt happen.

But it did, so our friend scrambles to scrape up a litle money and look for a cheap car cause he's without wheels again. Well whadda ya know, theres a 88 Prelude for sale in the paper cheap, its a red 5-speed 2.0Si, so he gets that. Its not as nice as his first one, had a dent in the door, but that makes our friend teach himself how to do a little body work, he buys some bondo and does a pretty good job of repairing the dent for a first timer. Then he takes it to Maaco and gets it re-sprayed red for a few hundred bucks, after that it looked just as good as the first one. So, he gets a head unit and an infinty perfect 12" sub, because all his stereo shit went with the first Lude, he also takes it to Meineke for a custom 3" exhaust with a round melon-shooter muffler. Now it was LOUD. But sounded good! He adds some cheap 15" rims that were on sale at Pep Boys, and drives that around for a while.

Well after a year or so, the clutch started slipping and he was having to add clutch fluid very often cause it was leaking obviously, plus he had taken a few hits, the front and rear bumpers were a lil crunched because our friend is only 20 and still learning how to drive. The car is not worth repairing, and buddy boy is in love with the 97-99 Eclipse, so he finda a used car dealer willing to work with his lack of credit (Car-nu, rt. 73, Jersey) and he finances a very sweet, Kalapana Black, '97 Eclipse GS-T, 5-speed, with only 50K on the odometer. It is one of the best days of this guy's life. That Eclipse GS-T was FAAAAST. Tourque out the ass. So he's ballin now, he's got a few credit cards, he adds a 3" Thermal exhaust, upgraded intercooler pipes and Blow-off valve, manual boost controller with guage, he jacks the boost up to 20 psi or sumnl.... Then, he decides its time for a Make-over so he gets it painted at Maaco, 01 Dodge Durango Intense Blue Pearl (code PB3) and sits it on some bright white 17" double 5 spoke rims. OMG this thing is amazing and little jailbait hotties are begging for a ride. This dude has bought himself happiness with a credit card.

In the meantime, our friend bought a red 86 base lude from a coworker, cleaned it up and sold it, and an old Camry from the Conicelli auction for re-sale.

So, after 40,000 relatively trouble-free miles, he decides that the GSX is the way to go, so he sells off the GS-T (to a guy named Josh, who incidentally won Eclipse of the Month almost instantly, now Josh is a moderator at that site) And he buys a SWEET-ASS 99 Eclipse GSX, Black with black leather, 5 speed, AWD turbo. He lowers it with Eibach race springs (slammed!) Thermal exhaust, upgraded IC pipes, greddy BOV, HKS type 1 turbo timer that measured 0-60, 1/4 mile times and much more, (according to the HKS gadget the GSX was doin the quarter in 14.0@96, and that was before the--->) lightweight flywheel, and upgrade clutch that made it noticeably faster... But the reason he had the clutch replaced was because the AWD trans broke, and our friend didnt really abuse it much either, it just broke. So that was a $3300 ouchy right there, and our buddy is getting in kinda deep with these credit cards.

In the meantime, he has got himself another 86 Prelude Si 5 speed at the auction again, as a back-up beater car to keep miles off the GSX and to use while it was being repaired.

To be continued....

So Dude didnt do anything special to the 86 Si, other than spraypaint it to make it more presentable. And now he is in such debt that he decides to sell his baby (the GSX) to try to get the debt under control. So he puts it on autotrader (this was before the days of Craigslist) and, get this, some kid flys in from Iowa, buys the car and drives it all the way home. Do you fuckin believe that? He made it home safe and sound too.
Well the 86 Si is falling apart (it's his 4th Lude, in case your counting) and when the inspection stickers run out, he has to send it to the junkyard. But he has bought himself a nice '91 Honda CRX-Si, 5-speed, paid $2300 or $2200 I believe, its teal green and in good shape, gets 30 or 35 mpg, and is pretty quick, so he's having fun. But he still craves the thrust of the turbocharged DSM's, So he finds a 95 Talon TSi, 5-speed, FWD turbo, on DSMtrader. This one is flat black, and has a lot of upgrades including an upgraded turbo (16G)He and a friend went up to Brooklyn, NYC (bed-stuyv, home of Biggie Smalls) to get it, at 2AM.
But when he gets it home, he is having trouble getting inspection stickers for the bullshit emmisions, cause it has a different year motor in it and other BS. But, as luck would have it, on his way to a shady mechanic he was gonna bribe to put stickers on it a few towns over, some lady made a wrong move and crashed right into him! Totalling his new Talon! Well there was no denying it was her fault, and her insurance cut him a check for more than he paid if I remember correctly, plus he got to keep the wreck and sell it off, cause it had a 6-bolt motor with a 16G turbo and all this other shit that was worth money, I think he got an additional $1500 for the wreck plus the $5200 or 5300 the insurance gave him. So he's got plenty of cash to work with now. I believe the CRX was gone by now, he (practically) gave it to a friend who needed a car, and it had a month left on the inspection and wasnt gonna pass without a ton of work.
So he's lookin around on ebay and finds a "Kona" blue Talon Tsi FWD turbo (our friend has sworn off the AWD DSM's after his experience with the GSX, more trouble than its worth he says, besides, the AWD is only faster in 1st gear, gears 2-5 the FWD car will pull harder, thats if you can get it to hook up) This Kona blue Talon is EXACTLY the right car in the right color, he bids on the car, goes to check it out, buys it, it passes inspection needing absolutely nothing. I think he paid 42 or 44 hundo sumn like that.
He decides not to go crazy with this one, a simple lowering on some AWD rims will do. (The AWD's came with 17's, FWD's got 16's) so thats what he does. And he puts a stereo in it and maybe a few lil things but nothing crazy no exhaust or blow off valve or anything. So then, dude decides that Philly is too cold, and wants to move to Arizona for some reason. He was smoking a lot of weed at this point in his life, may have affected his decision making. So he packs up everything he owns, like 800 pounds of shit, loads up the Talon, and drives all the way the fuck to AZ. Slight problem on the way, somewhere in Missouri the Talon chews up a valve and starts runnin fucked up. But he figures, as long as its still runnin, he'll keep drivin, so he continues to drive, on 3 cylinders basically, and it made it to AZ. He rents a room from a Mormon guy and gets a job at Maaco. He takes this pic of the Talon (after he had the head fixed, equaling more debt on the credit cards) in front of the house he was stayin:

Sweet lil ride, huh?
So, dude is bored with AZ after a few months and decides to pack up and drive home. But on a cold night somewhere in New Mexico, he hits a patch of ice goin 70 and loses control, totaling the Talon.

Shit.

No he's in the middle of nowhere with all his shit in his Talon that he just wrecked and its undriveable.

Fuck.

Well, he calls triple-A, they tow him to a hotel near a small service shop, but its a holiday weekend or sumn so he waits a couple days for them to open to see if they could fix his car good enuff to get him home maybe, but they tell him its fucked. So he says 'well I guess its your lucky day' and hands them the title, gets what he can carry out of the car, and calls a cab to take him to the greyhound bus station. He lost most of his possessions in that incident. So he's at the bus station in Alberquerque, and this retarded lady is talking to him, mostly nonsense, but one thing that stood out was when she said 'do you want some money? I can have my daddy give you some money.' He says no, but always wonders what woulda happened if he had said 'yes, I would like some money please.' He vows to never decline money again. He arrives home after a 2-day sleep-deprivation torture hell nightmare crowded smelly bus ride ( he was also contributing to the funky-ness on the bus, he was sneakin um off now and then, silently) with a few hundred bucks to his name, not many possessions, and no car.

He looks at the for sale ads on Preludepower.com! He see's some black chick from north Philly selling a all-white '91 Lude Si for only $250, but it has a toasted valve and needs the head rebuilt. Well he gets it, and the head job gets put on the ole credit card, and he was pleasantly surprised to find the car came with (a working AC) infinity speakers including tweeters with crossovers up front, and a nice Jensen CD player (he never would have considered Jensen, but it sounded so good he's been a fan to this day) Now, she was not worthy of this car, she broke everything she tryed to fix or modify, the directional rims were all wrong, it took some time to correct all her stupidness. But for $250, hey, cant complain.

Our friend keeps looking at ebay and such, seeing if theres any good deals on Preludes close-by, eventually finds a blue 86 base in Jerzy, goes and gets it, pays $350 or sumn, fixes the alternator for a few hundred. He has the intention of fixin it up and selling it, or even swapping the 91 rims over to the 86 and painting the old 2nd gen and selling off the 91, cause the 86 was in better shape, but instead our friend has no where to work on it, and it just sits for months, unregistered. But, he's getting a little pissed at the cold weather again, and decides he wants to roll down to Florida to visit grandmom. So, he sells the blue 86 for a loss, just needed to dump it quickly, oh, and he buys new polished Rota Slipstreams 16" with some nice sticky tires, to makes sure his rubber is decent for the trip down I-95. That goes on the ole card, too.

Well he makes it all the way to georgia, and the Lude starts fuckin up. He looks and looks but doesnt see the problem. He gets a tow the remaining hundreds of miles, to the tune of $1500 on the ole card, to granny's house. On the way he trades the redneck driver some weed for a methadone tab, it is our friends first experience with an opiate.

Turns out, the rotor had backed off the distributor a lil bit. Thats it. Well jesus, Our buddy feels pretty dumb for not lookin inside the dist-cap. $1500 out the window, but, at this point, its becoming obvious that theres no way he can ever pay all this back, so mise well max um all out before ya stiff um, that way ya get free shit.

He's livin large down in Bradenton, Fl, with grandma, decides to go visit Miami and Ft Lauterdale, etc. So he does, spend a nice couple days in South beach, relaxing. But before leaving to come back to grandma's house, he forgets to check his oil (B21 owners, check your oil) and halfway home the ole B21 runs out of oil, and dies a thrashy, grinding death. The tow bill home from that? $500 on the ole card. Now what? Preludepower members seem to think he should get a JDM B20, so he does, $1500 on the ole card. Now the brake light fuse keeps blowing. WTF?

But he see's a black 91 Prelude for sale a few towns over that looks to be in real good shape, just needs paint. So he goes and gets it, puts it on the ole card. He swaps over the rims from his white 91 that he's not using anymore, and takes it to Maaco for a fresh spray of black, lowers it tints the windows, adds a stereo, header, cold air intake:

This was to be the nicest Prelude our friend will have owned to this date. Shoulda kept it. Rust free Florida car. So he's down there, having fun, renting a cheap room from a few mexican guys, workin at Pizza Hut. He's having a ball goin to the local 1/4 mile dragstrip:

But no matter what he does, he cant seem to get the car to run any better than 16.5 or sumn like that, when he thinks it should be doing at least a 15.9 with all the work he put in, plus he was runnin no passenger seat, nothing in trunk, and hardly any gas in the tank. Well the alternator starts to go, so he decides to sell his (7th if you're counting) Prelude, and look for something with either more cylinders or a turbo.
And he finds a 88 Chevy Z24, black with a 5 speed stick, for $1200 in Jacksonville. Altho when he gets there he negotiates it down to an even $1K.

Well, the Z is a lot of fun when its runnin right, but the problemis that sometimes it doesnt run right, and other times it doesnt run at all. He cleans it up, adds an intake, a dual tip muffler (the 2.8 v6 sounded MEAN) and takes it back to Maaco for a squirt of the same blue paint that was on his talon:

But the Z is proving itself to be unreliable at this point, and his credit cards are maxed and defunct, so he cant just drop in a Corvette LS1 and 'put it on the ole card' so he parks it in a lot near his house with a for sale sign, and hopes that it will run OK on the test drive, should anyone want to drive it. But our friend gets picked up one night for an unpaid traffic ticket and spends a few nights in jail. In jail he is brutally raped and has since turned homo thus the pinky color I chose for this part of the story NO I AM JUST KIDDING just trying to keep you on your toes, thats not true, he wasnt raped but he did spend a few nights in jail and during that time, the lot owner had his Z towed away, and now they want 300 bucks or some shit to get it out. But he has zero. And he is frustrated and tired of dealing with problems, life has been kickin him in the ass, so he says fuck it, they can keep it.

So then he moves back to Philly, and gets another Lude (# in Jerzy, a white 88 2.0Si with auto trans, very rusty, but it was only $500 for a Prelude, and it had an AC that worked, so he over looked the rust and the auto trans because of the price and the fact he needed a car quickly and cheap. Well the shady dude that sold it to him forgot to tell him the trans was on its last legs so after two months he had to scrape up about $900 to put in a replacement trans, he went all the way up to queens or somehwere in NYC I forget to get one off Preludepower member (I forget his username but his real name is Brian he drives a red 90-91) and after that he got another year out of that Lude, or so, until one day he was on the highway, and had to make a sudden evasive maneuver to avoid a truck, but because he had cheaped out on his tires and bought Pep boys Futura, he managed to avoid death and injury, and the truck, but not the guard rail. Now Lude #8 is a bit smashed in the front but still driveable, so he drives it around a few months while saving up money for another car. One day he is at a used car dealer in Quakertown checking out a 90 Z24 just like the one he had in FL, but the dealer also has a red 88 Prelude 2.0Si on the lot.

Will our hero make the red 88 Prelude #9? Or will he decide to give the American muscle another try with the Z24? Tune in next time to hear the exciting conclusion!

(its real late and I'm real tired so I'll finish this within a couple days hopefully)

OK, so the guy went up to quakertown to check out a Z24, it was light blue, it had a 3.1 motor which is more powerful than the 2.8 he had in his 88 Z, and it had the black interior which is regarded as the nicest interior. But he wasnt sold on it yet cause it had the pesky 3 speed auto trans. So he takes it out for a spin, and it runs like shit. Sputtering, misfiring, the works. Well obviously he wasnt gonna plunk down $2k for that POS. So he asks to take the red 88 Prelude out, and it seems to run OK, clutch is good, no grinds, its eager to start right up, no shaking or anything funny, no smoke, only 160k on her. It does seem to have a weird lack of low-rpm power tho, but he figures it might need a tune up, so he takes it. Drives it around for a few weeks, and the low rpm lack of power is really becoming an annoyance, so he looks around and sees the adjustment on the distributor for the timing is all the way advanced. He takes it to his mechanic and confirms the t-belt is off two teeth but the assholes just advanced the adjustment all the way instead of putting the belt on correct. They are lucky it didnt bend any valves! Well he gets that fixed, and starts experimenting with spraypainting bits and peices of the car that need touch ups. One day he decides to go ahead and spraypaint the whole car, and change it from red to white. Rustoleum gloss white to be specific. Around this time he buys some used gunmetal 17 rims off craigslist for 400, and throws them on, after which it looked like this:

All is well and good until one day it blows its tail light fuse, just like the white 91 did. And it keeps on blowing it over and over. So he's like 'fuck' and sets up a trade with this kid in reading for his 89 S dual carb, gold on brown, slammed, with lots of rust, but comes with a bangin stereo and some extras. He just wanted one with tail lights that worked. So they trade, and the new gold lude looks like shit with all the rust, but less than 24 hours after he gets it, he has all the rust fixed up and gives it a fresh coat of gloss black rustoleum, and throws his gunmetal rims on, of course, which looked like this:

Well he didnt have this car too long, because it ran like shit, the dual carbs are junk honestly, plus the kid actually did his share of lying and ommiting plenty of shit wrong with it, a broken motor mount being one of them. Lude #10 was getting 15mpg, unnacceptable. So he auctions it off on ebay. But keeps his rims.

Then in a stroke of very good luck, he finds a 89 Prelude 2.0Si 4WS on ebay, in Philly, with a starting bid of $500. Its white and immaculate, and says it runs perfect, but has 249K miles. As long as it runs good he says, miles dont matter so much. SO he sends a message to the seller asking how much would it take to end the auction early and sell to him? The seller replies that he doesnt want to end it early. Our hero was prepared to pay $1300 to ensure he got his hands on this rare 4WS gem. Lo and behold, the auction ends and he is the only bidder, he wins the no reserve auction at $500. Not a very bright move on the seller's part, because now he is contractually obligated to sell. Of course the worst that will happen is he gets bad feedback, but still. Our hero hounds him to hurry up and deliver the Lude, he eventually does, and now our hero is lovin the 4WS!!! Handles so great! He wants to put his rims on, but knows it wont look right until lowered, so he gets it lowered at this place he has dealt with several times, but not always with positive experience. This time is no different, he gets the car back and it is hardly driveable. The tires are squealing when going straight, and inb the rain he has to slow to 20 or 30 mph or he will spin out. He had paint $500 to the shop that did the lowering, which is about half of the bill. He decides that they have fucked up his car for the last time, he is not going back there and he is not going to pay the rest of the bill, fuck um! To this day the dude still calls and hounds him for the money, but dont do shitty jobs and then you wont get stiffed on the bill! Plus $1000 for a simple lowering spring install is too much. That wasnt even shocks or camber kit, nothin, just springs. Fuck that. He also has painted the car a satin black color with spraypaint, this time its rustoleum appliance enamel gloss black, and it looks suprisingly good for $40.
pics:

he has also blacked out the engine bay so its hard to tell the car didnt come black, and painted the valve cover, and installed a teg CAI:

So now he's desperate to get a good alignment done, he takes it to Ardmore Honda (ardmore, PA) and they basically charge him 40 bucks to tell him they dont know how to do it since its 4WS. OMFG. So he goes to this shop where all they do is alignments, and they charge him $160, but they do a perfect job, and even adjust the camber to look straight up even tho its lowered. Freakin great job, and it rode so nice after that. Of course he puts his rims on pronto, but now he has painted the rims with chrome spraypaint as he has tired of the gunmetal:

Well our boy is livin large, drivin his mean-ass satin black 4WS. Until one day he gets pulled over and BUSTED for drivin witout insurance. He loses his license over that, and then, the driver side shock BREAKS IN HALF no doubt due to the fuck-ups who lowered it. Well our boy was delivering pizza and using his car to work, so now he cant drive, he's getting desperate for money and sells the car to pay the rent. He got $1200 even tho it had a broken shock! Was still driveable tho. Was a damn shame, he loved that car. Lude #11 buh-bye.

More to come....

Our friend is without a car again, and needs a reliable car for work. He negotiates a deal with his mom to buy her 2000 Corolla LE for $6000. It has only 60k miles. He ends up paying only $4500, but intends to pay the remaining $1500 when he can. Well he's drivin the Corolla around, but is unhappy that it has no personality, nor any athletic ability, its certainly not as agile as the ludes. But he knows that old cars are nothing but trouble, so instead of buying ludes to drive, he decides to buy them to fix up and sell for profit. He finds one on the washing ton DC crasigslist, for $1000, but he haggles them down to 600 on the phone. Hops on a greyhound bus, and drives his new red 88 2.0Si home. The paint is faded, it has plenty of rust, and a big dent behind the drivers door. It also needs a new t-stat and 4 new tires. Well our friend does all the body and mechanical work himself, and buys a used compressor and a $40 spraygun from ebay that actually was very high quality, and gives it a fresh coat od R-51 in PPG Omni urethane. Then he takes a zillion pics and posts an ad on CL:

Well when he's done this thing looks clean as fuck. he ditched the plastic hubcaps and sprayed the steelies with chrome paint, and blackened the moldings and window trim. Well less than 24 hours after he posted the ad, some kid came from a few towns over and paid cash, drove her home! This is the perfect cash cow he said. Made a tidy profit too.
He looks for more cheap Ludes, finds one in hartford, conneticut. The girl tells him some stuff wrong, but when he gets all the way up there theres a lot more than she said wrong with it. But he uses that as a point to haggle, and drives home another 88 or 89 (forget) white on black 5 speed Si. This one he blacks out all doorjambs and engine bay, etc, and paints her black:

This one he has trouble selling because of the long list of shit wrong with it, he eventually sells it but for no profit. Due to a lyin bitch. Oh well.

TO be continued.....

Holy shit man. You totally fail at life.

You do have an impressive amount of credit available to you, though.

I remember the one Red Lude when i was looking for a car, can't forget that smoke pouring out the tailpipe. It's like a banjo should be playing for background music while reading this.

Prelude of the Month
Huge props for keeping some of these Ludes from the junkyard and getting them the attention and TLC they deserve! Keep them on the road. I feel like a total noob, having only owned five:

1989 Si 5MT red/black
1986 Si 5MT blue/blue
1991 Si 4WS 5MT red/black
1989 Si 4WS 5MT yellow/black
1991 Si 4WS 5MT red/black

I am now in the process of buying back Lude #3 . Details forthcoming.
