oil question

hey guys i got a quick easy question.. my 98 prelude is burning a decent amount of oil... which i know is common on ludes...but its more than just a little bit. so i heard if i run synthetic oil i will burn less do to the fact that it has a higher boilin point or w.e.

so what im wondering is..will running synthetic oil hurt my engine in any way..and will this help in any way in improving my oil burn problem

I don't think it will hurt or help. You might try switching to a slighly thicker oil as long as you live in a warm environment.

I think your engine needs some testing/work done.

There is no miracle oil.

i know you said your burning...
but you may be leaking as well..
if so, try and see where its coming from...

like what side? up top or down low?

and then we can guide you to what may be the culprit for this oil loss

Synthetic oil can actually cause increased consumption and/or leaking because it cleans all the deposits off your oil seals, cylinder walls, valves, etc.

Anywhere up to 2 quarts burned every 3,000 miles is normal under normal driving. If you hit VTEC all the time you could burn 4 quarts in 3,000 miles easily!

On the oil topic, I just got an oil change done at the dealer, and they put in 5w-30 castrol syntec blend. Is that normally what they put in?

^^^Heard nothing but disappointment with Castrol syntec, hahahahahaha. Don't know why; don't know what, but that's all I've heard.

I wish somebody would've shed light on that when the brought it up last time....

Oh, and I think oem filters from the US suck balls. The only good oem filters are from Japan, and you can't get them imported exept from private sellers(just like importing other car parts).

This is why it's a BAD idea to use the oem Honda filters from here in the U.S. There are 3 different reviews of the three different Honda filters, all made and released in different countries, so make sure you read the review for the U.S. made/sold filter! : http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/old_filters.shtml Much worse than fram! ewwwwwwwww

Good luck.

That's all I ever used in my old car,a nd for a little while in my Prelude. Supposed to be great conventional oil.

But for some reason, just never heard anything good about the Castrol synthetic stuff....But like I said, I never got solid proof, however, they were repudable people, for what it was worth(not much to must, hahahah).

People spend too much time worrying about which oil to use. In reality it makes more difference to your engine to keep the oil level checked and oil changed at the proper intervals v. the oil you use. Any good motor oil in 5W30 is going to protect your engine just fine for the life of your car.

Agreed. Except for minor differences in cleaning agents, most oils are going to do the same job on the street if you change it when you should. On the track where temps and friction come more into play is where you will start to see differences.

castrol full synth 5w40 here.

my lude is the one that is burning about 3-4 drops of oil at change.

never had a single problem with oil temp nor oil pressure.

as i put the oil in, it gets brownish after a few days, a bit darker in a month and ALMOST black (still can see that it isnt burnt but it just does its job) at change.

so i thing i dont agree that castrol synth sucks.

(note: engine is stock)

Man, someone used to have a link in their sig about Oil. Some Engineer on a Ferrari forum wrote some wicked huge document on it. Unfortunately when I bookmarked it FF decided to forget the request.

I run 10-30 Valvoline. Change oil and plugs every 1500 miles, or when the oil starts getting to dark. Also I've been running the OEM filter since day one.. and not a single gripe from my end.

Synthetic oil FTW...

I've run Castrol Syntech OR Mobile 1 Synthetic 10W-30 with a K&N oil filter since the day i bought my car. It still uses the average 2-3 quarts between oil changes, but then again, i tend to drive like an asshole. When i drive like a sane human being () i only use about 1.5 quarts between changes.
