I still wonder where I would be at on my 240 if I would have bought one, instead on the lude. The S15 front end doesn't match the rest of the S13 at all. I'd rather have an S15, those things are sick looking.

S15 FTW! If they had them in america I would be driving that instead of the lude.

s15 is cool, but come on, you have to give the s13 more props for classic 90s style. Besides, an s13 can be just as fast and brutal.

Set up right they can be amazingly fast and fun to drive. Don't half ass it and try to find something new/different to be more original but I love these cars. RWD ftw.

Stock my 89 prelude beat my friends 90 240 with the RB in it. Then he got his sr20 and exhaust/fmic - (oh he didn't even have the FMIC yet) - and he slaughtered me, i got my 5th gen and thought i'd get him back, but he slaughtered me still.

2000 dollar car - 3000 ish dollar swap - 1000 into suspension - 1000 ish into wheels/tires = pretty damn close to s2000 performance.

So engine wise, whats the best sr20det to get?
Ive been told that there is a jdm 6 speed black top engine from 99-02 s15 silvias. Will it fit in the s13?

the s15 sr20det is the notched Blacktop. it does have a 6spd tranny but it sucks. the 6spd tranny is weaker then the 5spd tranny from the other sr20det motors. here let me break it down.

This is quoted from the SR20det FAQ on zilvia.net. (http://zilvia.net/f/engine-tech/6260...det-faq-4.html)
Quote:
Specifications for the Red Top SR20DET
(Found on the 91-93 180SX & Silvia)
  • Displacement: 1998cc (2.0 liter)
  • Cam Type: DOHC 16 valve, chain driven cam sprockets
  • Bore & Stroke 86mm x 86mm
  • Compression: 8.5:1
  • Horsepower: 205hp @ 6000rpm
  • Torque: 203 ft/lbs @ 4000rpm
  • Stock Boost: 7 psi
  • Throttle Body Bore: 60mm
  • Injector Size: 370cc/min
  • Turbo Specs:
  • Compressor: T-25, 60 trim 56mm BCI-1 compressor.
  • Turbine: T-25, 62 trim 53.8mm 0.64 A/R turbine housing.
  • Center Section: Journal bearings
  • Performance:
The stock turbo will be safe to 13-15 psi. After that, the turbo is past its efficiency range, and power increases will fall off and are not worth the risk of turbo damage. The engine should produce 230-250 RWHP at safe boost.

Specifications for the Black Top SR20DET
(Found on the 94-98 180SX)
  • Displacement: 1998cc (2.0 liter)
  • Cam Type: DOHC 16 valve, chain driven cam sprockets
  • Bore & Stroke: 86mm x 86mm
  • Compression: 8.5:1
  • Horsepower: 205hp @ 6000rpm
  • Torque: 203 ft/lbs @ 4000rpm

  • Center Section: Journal bearings
  • Performance:
The stock turbo will be safe to 13-15 psi. After that, the turbo is past its efficiency range, and power increases will fall off and are not worth the risk of turbo damage. The engine should produce 230-250 RWHP at safe boost.

Specifications for the S14 Black Top SR20DET with VTC
(Found on the 95-98 Silvia)
  • Horsepower: 220hp @ 6000rpm
  • Torque: 203 ft/lbs @ 4800rpm
  • Turbo Specs:
  • Compressor: T-28, 60 trim 60mm BCI-1 compressor in T-04B housing
  • Turbine: T-25, 62 trim 53.8mm 0.64 A/R turbine housing.
  • Center Section: Ball Bearing
  • S14 SR20DET's use a different ECU and harness, these are extremely expensive and hard to find.
  • Variable valve timing system and a different turbo are the significant changes from the S13 SR20DET engines.
  • The S13 uses a "low port" intake design vs. the S14 "high port" design.
  • Performance:
The stock turbo will be safe to 13-15 psi. After that, the turbo is past its efficiency range, and power increases will fall off and are not worth the risk of turbo damage. The stock engine should produce 250-260 RWHP at safe boost using stock turbo. Upgrading turbo, fuel and rest of need parts will yield 300-375.

Specifications for the S15 Black Top SR20DET
(Found on the 99+ Silvia)
  • Horsepower: 250ps @ 6000rpm
  • Transmission: 6 Speed, Close Ratio
  • Injector Size: 480cc/min
  • Turbo Specs:
  • Compressor: T-28, 60 trim 60 mm BCI-1 compressor in T-04B housing
  • Turbine: Inconel turbine wheel. Cast divider wall between turbine discharge and wastegate.
  • Center Section: Ball Bearing
  • This engine is expensive and hard to get. If you are on a tight budget, please consider other options as the money you save from buying this engine can be better used to build up a really nice red top.
  • Additions: 6 speed manual transmission. The 6 speed cannot be used on the S13 and S14 motors, and uses a different driveshaft. Speed sensor is located in the differential. The 6 speed is cool, but is not as strong as the 5 speed from the older cars. There is basically 6 gears inside the same housing that was designed to hold 5 gears. This makes the gears smaller and weaker, therby breaking more often.
the vvt is nissans version of "vtec" or variable valve timing and is available on both the s14 and s15 notchtops. most guys just disengage it anyway cause "turbo>variable valve timing" anyway, so it doesn't really do much for them. imo, the money saved on buying an s13 redtop could be used to make it much faster then the others. keep in mind, these numbers are stock on stock boost. mine is an s13 redtop with the stock t25 that makes 280whp with upgraded fuel management, FMIC, a fully tuned EMS, and high boost at 15psi.

Whoa that guide was really helpful, I think redtop definitely looks like the winner as the s14 one needs that expensive wiring shit and the s15 one has weak gears. Not to mention the redtop would be the original silvia engine which would be cool.

How much did you pay for your red top?

Oh and definitely, REP.

Yeah, thats tru, but I look at it this way, for the amount i would spend on all that extra wiring harness and shit, I could just get a red top and buy a bigger turbo. Just a thought.

a redtop can be had for between $2k-$3k. if you search enough, you might be able to find them for a little under $2k. you also have to remember that you need to do general maintenance stuff before putting in the engine as well. this means swapping in a new water pump, all hoses, new oil pan, etc. better to be safe then sorry, even though most these engines have between 30k to only 60k miles on them, they are from the 90's and have been sitting around for a while so its good to put some fresh parts on them. not to mention the popular upgrades that come with an sr swap such as 3" exhaust all the way back, FMIC, 255 fuel pump, and boost controller.

you're best bet is to find a preswapped one that already has all those things done. you'll save a lot of money. and if you are lucky/careful about what you buy, even a slightly modded one will save you alot of money. i bought mine preswapped with some things already done to it as well and i paid probably $2k-$3k less then it would have taken to build it up to that point. we all know how it goes, upgrading cars actually devalue it a little bit or basically you'll never get the money back that you put into a car.

on another note, used BB T28's from the s14/s15's can be had for around $250-$450. if you really serious about a 240, check out that other 240 related thread in this section. there is talk about a guy in PA trying to sell a fully built s13 with a notchtop sr20det for $7k. it has a gt30r turbo in it. i have seen this car in person and it is definitly a sleeper and killer deal. mid 11's car with fairly low boost. tune and up that boost and you'll probably be in the 10's range with 500whp-600whp. oh yea, and that 11.5 he ran was on an open diff and this is also his dd.
