How to: Improve PS feel and maintainance

My power steering on my ~210k mile 3gp has slowly gotten harder and harder to turn the wheel at slow speeds, in parking lots, and heavy traffic. The PS just wasn't boosting enough anymore.

Since I am a firm believer in the overall feel and experience of driving an automobile I rather fix my PS then take it out for the 3-4whp + weight improvement. I tested my car without PS and it just isn't worth it, especially with larger rims and aftermarket steering wheel. So I fixed it: here's how

Replace the fluid and get rid of air in the system
Equipment needed: A rag, pliers, small empty bottle of water (I think 8oz), oil pan (that thing you drain oil into), 2 bottles of Honda type PS fluid.
  1. With a rag ready, pull off the lower hose on the PS fluid reservoir from where it connects to the PS pump on the motor.
  2. Place an oil pan under the car to catch any ps fluid that drops
  3. hold the hose up so it doesn't drop fluid everywhere
  4. Place the empty water bottle between the exhaust manifold and fan as low as you can get it.
  5. Put the end of the hose inside the bottle
  6. take the cap off of the top of the ps fluid reservoir.
  7. watch it drain and when it fills up, empty the bottle into the oil pan and connect it back up and drain again.
  8. Next, carefully make sure nothing is in the way of the belts or anything and start the car.
  9. turn the wheel back and forward lock to lock three or four times.
  10. turn off the engine before it gets a chance to warm up and melt that bottle sitting next to the exhaust manifold.
  11. The fluid reservoir should be empty now. So connect the hose back up and fill it with the new fluid. If it isn't empty, you probably have the hose and bottle placed too high, it needs to be below the reservoir in order to drain. Lower it down as low as you can get it.
  12. Place the cap back on the reservoir.
  13. Turn the car on and turn the wheel lock to lock 3-4 times.
  14. Check the fluid level. Add more if necessary. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T OVERFILL IT.
  15. Test drive the car.
That's it! That fixed my steering problems and now I can drive in a parking lot with my pinkie finger. I recommend this procedure to anyone that hasn't changed their fluid in at least 5 years or 50k miles.
