Hybrid Axles: H22 with AZ Motor Mounts

Hybrid Drive Axles: B21A1 –H22A for AZ Mounts

After trying a number of different combinations and searching through a junkyard for a day I found the beam length needed to make a set of axles for the AZ mounts. Originally I tried the combination outlined by the guy from Latvia and quickly discovered that they would not even come close to working.

See Below:

^**** This combination will not work****^

After measuring up some of the axles I had lying around on my shelf’s I discovered that the H22/23 driver’s side beam was 6mm shorter. I then re-assembled the new combination using the two H22 driver’s beams instead of accord beams. This time the spindles and upper control arms would all go back together. After getting the wheels back on I loaded the drivers side suspension using a jack to bring the axle to parallel the ground (The most the axle will ever push in to the inner joint) and discovered that it was binding and would not work.

See Below:
1: 3rd Gen lude outer joint
2: Prelude 1994 driver’s side beam
3: H22 inner joint and intermediate shaft
4: H22 inner joint
5: Prelude 1994 driver’s side beam
6: 3rd Gen lude outer joint

^**** This combination will not work****^

So I went to the junkyard and started the process of disassembling, measuring, and reassembling axles to try and find a combination that would work. I knew that I did not need much; if I could find a set that was 5 mm shorter they would work.

These are the results of my search:

I found a set out of 1990 Acura Integra axles that were perfect. The Integra uses an axle combinations that has the same lengths on both the passenger and drivers side, in an attempt to reduce torque steer. So it does not mater whether you get drivers or passenger beams.

So the final working combination:

1: 3rd Gen lude outer joint
2: Integra 1990 (Driver’s / Passengers) Beam
3: H22 inner joint and intermediate shaft
4: H22 inner joint
5: Integra 1990 (Driver’s / Passengers) Beam
6: 3rd Gen lude outer joint

Works perfectly with no biding at all. Hope this helps and happy luding

glad you found that out.great work.
can you show me picture of those mounts in your car?i am curious how they look cause they sound alot different than the Latvian ones which i have.
maybe a pic of the mounts before install too will be good.
thanks in advance.

p.p.
i wish to you all who wants H22 in their 3th gen ludes to accomplish your will.
cause i can tell from my own experience-it worth the efforts 100%
today i went for a drive with a friend who i haven't seen for more than an year and he was laughing like an idiot all the time.his smile was so vast that even when the police pulled us over ,they asked him why is he so happy
his answer was something like: well,i haven't seen that guy for a long time and since than he made a beast from that car.i just enjoy the ride.
it was a weird day today

Damn Deathwish, thats some serious dedication, mad props to you. I'm sure you had a fun time pulling apart so many junkyard suspensions to check out axles. Good Job!

How well will those Integra bits stand up to H22 goodness is the question. I'd be willing to bet that those swapped cars won't remain stock forever. :P

Great job with all the dirtywork tho.

Rep point for you.

All of the beams that I collected have the same spline counts and thickness. These are beam spline counts and thickness not outer joints. The differences are in the inner and outer joints. The only other thing is that the H22 has re-enforced finger bearings. They have a slider attached to them the slides into a grove on the inner joints. As well the actual finger joint could be considered slightly buffer but not by anything that really matters IMO. Unless you plan to make more then 300-350WHP I really doubt you will have a problem with the axles. But slicks might change that. I have some pics of the differences I will try and post up.
Thx for all the support.

Here are some pictures of some of my collection of axles. This should clear up any of the things that I cannot explain with words. I don’t have pics of the teg’s but they look the exact same as the 90 lude and the 94 accord.

1994 Honda Accord:

1990 Honda Prelude:

Honda axles are very strong bro... like he mentioned... unless high hp is in the mix and or slicks.. no need to worry. Spin your wheels a bit in first gear to relief stress from the axles and or transaxle and you'll be golden.

an email i got from Raxles.com since i was wondering aboutthe axles they made.

Quote:
Thank you for you inquiry!
For this h22 / Prelude conversion we offer 100% NEW axles that
require NO core return.
They are specifically made to fit with NO seal boss modification.
They are complete with new nuts and hub seals included.
We build these out of HD NEW components using Amsoil synthetic
racing grease and the BEST CV boots.
We have developed these units after MUCH research and MANY
successful installs.
They utilize the PRELUDE style inner joints which are 100%
necessary to prevent the inner joint from "popping out". The Integra style inner joints are too
SHORT at the transmission spline side.
They are $174.95 each.

well I'm just wondering cus on 1 side a company that made some says Integra ones are too short...

but on the other hand you're saying the Integra ones are NEEDED for these different mounts?

was the change in the mounts THAT different?

Yes. PRI mounts are completely out of place and resulted in a nasty vibration due to engine placement. AZ mounts fixed this and thus we need to use different mounts.

B20luda has an H22 in his 3rd gen. He's using stock axles. Go figure.

No offence but they haven’t a clue about what they are saying. I’m sure they build a great product but that is just it. They are just trying to sell their product, which is not a bad thing. However, they should get their facts straight. In actuality the Integra axles are somewhat long. The inner joint has approximately 35 mm of total travel. The fingers on the inner joint are suppose to sit somewhere in the middle (17.5mm) of the inner joint housing, however they actually sit farther in towards the tranny side NOT, I REPEAT NOT FARTHER OUT. There is absolutely no way the inner joint is going to “pop out”. If anything I would have the Integra axles shortened by another 8mm but there is really no reason to. If you do not believe me that is fine but there is really no need to spend almost $400 on axles that you really don’t need.

I like their reply to you.
100% NEW // Really
Complete with NUTS // WOW bonus
HD NEW components // Prove it
Amsoil Synthetic RACE grease // New grease
The Best CV BOOTS // Just what is the best CV boot
Utilize the PRELUDE style inner joints // If you what to you can just swap them on to the Integra axles not an issue.
We have developed these units after MUCH research and MANY
successful installs. // I’m sorry have they actually got a set of AZ mounts

They might as well get down on their knees and beg. I’ am not saying don’t buy their axles but I do think they a trying a little to harder and haven’t the slightest clue about what they are saying. However, I would say if you do not believe me go to a junk yard get the bits and pieces and make your own. Guaranteed they will not be short.

Anyways: Good luck

Thanks for all the compliments I really appreciate it.

well the thing is... I don't have an engine... and can't find out for myself.

I also don't have the time.

I'm looking for something I can buy that is Good quality and will last a VERY long time (cus I plan on keeping my Lude for a Very long time as a Summer car)

So I could try and ask them to get Integra ones when they make them i really don't know but I also don't wanna go to a Junk yard and get stuff that's used and just brush it off and put it in my car...

That’s fine. I would recommend Gator Axles. By far the best axles I have ever come in contact with. Call them or fill out a tech sheet and you will get a one off set of custom high horse power axles. They don’t build OEM axles like Raxles, only one off sets and yes they will cost more. I would get a set if I thought it was necessary but I my opinion it really is not. Nothing wrong with using good old OEM parts.

Edit: Also I wouldn't recommend just brushing off anything.
