Flywheels and Clutches..... Who Knows What ?

Ok here is the Dilemma I am wanting a new clutch so I thought to myself well hey I will just get an Exedy replacement clutch.. Has like a 15-20% better holding Capacity then the stock one and since I am not going to be Boosting my car no need for a 200+ lbs Torque clutch. :)

SO here is the question I was looking at http://www.clutchcityonline.com/honda_prelude.htm And since i figured they are talking about the years as 88-89 has the B20 and the 90-91 has the B21 ? is that right ??? Oh yeah and do not the 90-91 ludes no matter what Motor B21 or 20 have a bigger clutch ?? like our sizes is 220 MM and the 88-89 212MM Is that the sizes according to B20 or B21 or are all 90-91 have the 220 mm Clutch ???

So that is one question.

Next question is Since I am going to be replacing the clutch I might as well either shave the flywheel or buy that Fidenza one...... Now I know some hate the 7lbs I think it is REALLY light but hey it is the only one that is made for our cars.........

Problem is I looked at the site and BAM http://www.nipponpower.com/drivetrain/flywheel/fidanza_honda.html All I see is the 88-89 FLYWHEEL !!! Nooooooooo Are the Flywheels the same for our cars or is that again the B20 or B21 being sepperated by the Year ??

I know someone else here has that Fidenza and I know that DavidT had the Exedy Clutch on his car but I need to know which ones to get for my car a 91 2.0Si

Thanx all for your time :)

Hope your not as confused as I am. :?

It doesn't matter what engine you have. The clutch set has to match the transmission year. Your car is a 90 or 91. So you have the D2A4 tranny. Any Si or 2.0Si in 90-91 had that tranny, so you want to order the clutch kit for the 90-91 prelude.

I don't think fidanza makes a lightweight flywheel for 90-91's. I've looked for them before and found nothing online.

Awsome that is what I thought for the clutch now what about the flywheels ???

oh yeah and don't the 88-89' have a D2J5 tranny ?

Anywho so that is the clutch question thanx abunch.

is there a Diff in the Flywheels between that year ?? like what about the Pressure plates ??

what am I going to need for this to work ?

I guess if you can't find a flywheel and you don't want to swap trannies, which i am sure you don't.... i would just get your oem flywheel machined and take some weight off of it... It most likely won't be as good as the fidanza one but it will prob be a lot better than the stock one right?

HERES THE ANSWER:::!!!!

i looked into a new clutch and flywheel for about 6 months, the 2.0L clutch fits the 2.1L motor, so teh b2a and b21 clutches are interchangeable. the flywheels ARE NOT!!! im not sure the differences but i think iits got to dowiht the patternt aht the mounting holes were drilled and fidanza only makes a flywheel for the b20 preludes. stillen on the other hand makes one for the b21 atleast thats what the site says they have...and i ahve the exedy clutch from clutchcityonline.net on my b21 and its great, my stocker had 162000 on it, and it was slipping a bit, when i got this clutch in it was much more defenitive when i put my foot down....

thanx for the info on the clutch man.

But on the Flywheel I was just wondering if the pressure plate is that same on the 88-89 as it is on the 90-91 B20A5 inb both models since that is what I have :)

Thanx again for all the replies I think I might just get a new OEM flywheel from Bap for like 50 bux and have it Shaved dows buy about 4 punds :) yeah taht 7lbs one was a little to lite hehehe

Ok, go look at those and compare numbers. The clutches or flywheels are not interchangeable between the years no matter what. The engine has nothing to do with it either. This is how it works, I've explained this several times and it's been proven several times. I even have my car with a 90 tranny from a B21 in my 91 B20. So this is it.
These are all for FI, no carb here.
88-89 trannies have to use 88-89 clutch and flywheel
90-91 trannies have to use 90-91 clutch and flywheel
You can put either tranny on any year 88-91 , you HAVE to use the the same year combo clutch flywheel with same year combo tranny like I wrote.

And to get a OEM one shaved down, it will run around $150. Thats for something like 6 pounds taken off. To just get it resurfaced it is like $40 and that takes off very little weight. And I honestly think were screwed for a light flywheel for 90-91s.

i know b series flywheels r interchanglable. i want to know if the 90-91 flywheels r interchangable with other b-series motors. like if u get a b18b flywheel and clutch could we use it. cause they r alot cheaper then r shit. there was this guy on 3rgenprelude who said he but the flywheels side by side and there where the same.

yea I heard that the b18 flywheel will fit our cars

But on the Flywheel I was just wondering if the pressure plate is that same on the 88-89 as it is on the 90-91 B20A5 inb both models since that is what I have
no, the flywheel for the b20 must use a b20 clutch/pressure plate
the b21 has a larger bolt patern (just BARELY larger)

I was helping a member with a clutch a while ago and he had a b20 engine in there so he ordered a b20 clutch...when we got in there we discovered the clutch he ordered didnt fit and then he remembered that the previous owner had replaced the engine. the old clutch and pressure plate were about 1/4 of an inch larger than the new one... we assumed that since his car was a 91 it probobly had orginaly had a b21 in there so the tranny must have been from the b21.

oops
But on the Flywheel I was just wondering if the pressure plate is that same on the 88-89 as it is on the 90-91 B20A5 inb both models since that is what I have
I just re-read that and saw that you were asking if the b20 in the 88-89 was the same as the b20 in the 90-91...
I assume as much...it is still the b20a5...same engine so its gotta be the same tranny and flywheel

?right?

Not trying to be rude tsiah, but did you read anything I wrote? Cause I promise you it is correct. I did quite a bit of research on that to see what went on what. cause the main thing I try to make people see, is that saying it's a B21 or a B20 doesn't matter. You just need to focus on the years to match them, bot engine.

ok...whoops
misread
sry
what must have happened when we were doing that clutch is that he got an 88-89 clutch. he told me that when he ordered it, he asked for a clutch for a 91 prelude with a b20 engine...so either he screwed up orderin or they screwed up the shipment. the clutch we had was too small

No big deal, i just try to get as many people as I can understand that. Cause it might be something someone else need sinfo about it and you'll understand it. When I bought my 90 tranny from a B21 to go on my 91 B20, I was still kinda worried. Even all the research I did comparing part numbers told me I was ok and it would work was still hmmm. But I did it swapped it by myself and drove off with no problems.

I have no info on any cross match clutch flywheels. So I'm not gonna give ya some bad info. I have a stock 90-91 flywheel sitting here if someone wants to have an extra to get lightened for no down time.

I would sell mine for $25 plus shipping. thats what I payed for it. And a new one from Honda will set you back about 200 squids. They ain't cheap. And it weighs 21lbs. And my zip is 30809 for shipping. Someone else asked me about it to. And I would take 5 pounds off and that will help you to shave off a half sec in 1/4 if your a goo driver. But the acceleration will definately be noticeable.

Hahahaha Thought your Zip looked famlliar heheh I used to live in 30905 hehehe Ft. Gordon GA when I was in the Army :) Nice I was in the Armpit though I think Augusta is a Stank hole of a city :p

Anywho that is cross country what would be the cheapest ? UPS or what ? thanx again
