Thanks for a great 'how to' J-Lude.

Me = maintenance noobie.... hopefully not for long.

My 5th gen's at 140k. I had the timing belt replaced at 100k... not sure if they did a valve adj. then... prob. not...

If my valves are out of proper adjustment, would my car always show any type of symptoms besides poor gas mileage? My car runs smooth now, no lag, no weird noises. Is it a good idea to adjust the valves just b/c it's been at least 40k miles? Maybe the car will run better than I thought possible?

Also, (while I'm asking...) should I consider cleaning the V-tec solenoid considering it's probably NEVER been done?

This Sunday I'm planning on changing my fuel filter, cleaning my EGR, IAC & PCV valves (never done that) & thinking about a valve adjustment & cleaning the V-TEC solenoid. Will probably change the spark plugs as well. (the air filter & oil have been done recently).

Being a nooooob, can I get all of this reasonably done in one day? I'm fairly mechanically inclined, I've done lots of research on how to's & have (or will have) the right tools by Sunday.

Thanks,

SW

Yes, you should be able to do the valves and the VTEC solenoid in one day.

I would install a new valve cover gasket because at 140K miles the original one is likely deteriorating and even if it's not leaking now it might start leaking once you take it off and put it back on...it's a cheap part, the ones that Autozone or Advance sell are fine for such a simple gasket.

The symptoms of valves that need adjustment is hesitation in throttle response at certain RPMS and ticking sounds at idle...if you let the car run and pop the hood and you hear "tick tick tick", especially when the motor was just started up then the valves likely need done. My motor had 68,000 miles on it when I did mine and most of them needed some adjustment...you have twice as many miles as that!

but make sure the ticking isn't the fuel injectors. cause my engine ticks also but majority of the valves were still within spec.

JLude doesn't want rep points... that's sad.

Anyway, good write-up. I wish I'd caught it sooner, I average 25 MPG, and would love some mores. I do think I need a valve adjustment, though. I think a maintenence day is in store for me.

is it really necessary to remove the spark plugs when doing a valve adjustment?
