Prelude of the Month
Alternator light on? how to inside...

Is your alternator light on? dont wanna buy a $150 plus alternator? if so read on

READ BEFORE U TAKE IT APART..

TOOLS NEEDED
8mm and 10mm wrench
proper sized phillips screw driver (has to be small in length)
feeler guage
Brain

First of all not sure how many people know this..u guys might already know, but i didnt see it on the site so i thought i might as well spill the beans..

I your alternator light is on its most likely due to the brushes inside the alternator. If your alternator is really noisy or the pulley has a bunch of play this fix prolly wont fix it for long if at all as u have a bearing prob.

To ck the brushes u must remove them, u DONT have to remove the alternator to do this...just follow these easy steps..

Disconnect the battery and remove the the connector and alternator lead on the alternator. u must also remove the plastic part below the wire (just another 10mm nut) once thats out of the way get an 8mm wrench and remove the sheild on the back of the alternator (3 nuts) once thats removed u will need a 10mm wrench or small rachet to get the other bolts off also 3 of them ( the nuts remove previously actaully bolt to these) once those are removed, pull off the backing of the alternator.

Now u have access to the brushes. They are located in the center of the alternator it has a rubber sheild that goes over them and there fastend to the back of the alternato with 2 phillips screws.. make sure u use the right screw driver to get these off, they are tight and u dont wanna strip them.. once screws are removed pull the brushes off and u will prolly find that there very worn down, at this point u need to contact your honda dealer and get a new set..most dealers actually carry these and dont ask for brushes for a prelude ask for this part number...31105-PZ1-003 this is a new brush set can be had for about 20 bucks...

now to install these bad boys...take a feeler guage and lay it over the shaft the brushes ride on and slide them into place, once in place just install parts in the order they were removed...If your brushes were worn out this will usally fix the problem, i have done it on countless customers cars and a few of my own preludes....

Good info, but if your writing a writeup, could you please use full words?
Much more professional looking, you know?

Look, it's an excellant writeup, that isn't covered anywhere else on the board, so we're all thankful.

But, if you found a writeup with "u" and such in it, and one with "you" and other full words, which one would you use?

Use whatever damn shortened stuff you feel like, but if your going to write a guide, make it professional, eh?

Nice write... my Alt is on the way out.... $20 bucks seems like a good fix...

"You" is more proffesional, but hell... if it end up on Mustard Cat's site... I'll believe it.

Ever heard of constructive criticism? Don't take shit so personally... they're just suggesting that you try to come across as knowing what you're talking about and not as another ricer dipshit.

The guy giving him constructive criticism has been doing it longer then he has, 18 years to be exact.

Before you get all pouty and sit in the corner saying you won't do any more writeups, could you please at least consider what exactly i said?

Heres the short version:

1) Excellant writeup, nobody has ever done one on alternators for this board.
2) More people are going to believe you if you use You rather then U.

Thats it, no insults, no mightier-then-thou-ness, nothing, honest well meaning advice.

18 years is a long time... i know techs at my work that have been here for 10Y plus and still dont know how to properly diagnois a car so. I have never met u seen u or any of your work...so again why? I could careless if people believe me or not the info is there. U and you is still said the same when u read it. i hate doing write ups is another reason things are cut short but like i said the info is there u can read it and go out to your car and apply what i have said simple as that. this is the internet not a book u should accept short terms.. plus the more people that believe me the more questions i would get, ha another reason people have really no clue whats done to my car except a few worthy of understanding / wont ask me questions that have been ansewered over and over..and say " ya im gonna turbo my car too" bla bla..most never do most never will and most are still in HS with there first car...ok im done

Best comeback ever.

I only have one question:

Why do a writeup if you don't want people to believe you?

if people dont believe what i say it dosent bother me a bit just thought i would share the info but people like to pick out every little thing even tho the message is clear as day. I get what your saying but its a bit of info from some guy on the internet take it how it is and leave it at that, i dont have all the time in the world to make it perfect so if i wanted your input i would have asked for it. Why dont u focus on people asking how to put air intakes and mufflers on there cars instead of trying to fix my minor grammer errors.. now this thread has turned into this instead of the real thing it was meant for...how to fix your god damn alternator without donating your left nut.. just leave it at that dude maybe u should have been a tutor instead of a tech?

Wow bro.... just let it go... be the bigger person and let it die. If Bob doesn't like it so be it. Like you said the info is there.

If he wants to he can always re type it however he wants.

I don't need you to tell me or anyone else what you've done... I appreciate the help you've given me and well I hate to see you do this!!!

EEK!!!! Don't let it get to you.

He does have a point though but like you said it's the internet not a helms manual

Poor grammar reflects on your character. Especially in roles where you're trying to educate others.
